  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Nelson on the South Island of New Zealand. Nelson has its own airport (NSN) which connects to other airports within NZ. Both Christchurch Airport (CHC) and Wellington Airport (WLG) are international airports relatively closeby that connect with Nelson.

  • How long is the tour? How many days cycling?

The standard tour is 3 days long with 3 days of cycling. There are options to extend the tour, either with an extra night in Mapua or in Kaiteriteri.

  • What's the tour like?

The tour will take you on a delightful meander from Nelson to Kaiteriteri (with a transfer back to Nelson at the end) along the coastal route. The tour is self-guided with detailed maps and information, centering around the attractions, landscape, fantastic food and drink on offer in the region. There's plenty on offer for all ranges and the tour operator states that this tour is very suitable for families with keen junior cyclists.

  • As the tour is self guided, how will I know where to go?

A 'Good Things' Map is included with the tour. These are waterproof, topographic-style maps. They illustrate the tour operator's exclusive recommendations for detours off the trail to visit all their favorite places. They provide tips for the best local food, wine, craft beer, art, history and landscape.  You will have detailed instructions about where to cycle each day to reach your destination and the tour operator is simply a phone call away if there are any issues in this regard.

  • Can I extend my trip? Or visit Abel Tasman National Park?

Yes! The tour is designed to make it easy for you to stay an extra night in Mapua, Kaiteriteri or  add a National Park Day to your trip. Here are the available options:

Add on option: Extra night in Mapua
Consider staying two nights in Mapua and have extra time to enjoy this arty, foodie village. Take time to wander and visit the galleries, shops, wine bar, brewery and cafes. Or follow the locals to the estuary for a swim at high tide (or take your lead from the kids who prefer to jump off the wharf). There is plenty to fill a relaxing rest day here.

With two nights in Mapua, there is also time for an on-road day ride to the village of Upper Moutere. For those with an interest in art, wine or beer, this day in the Moutere area is a must.

Add On Option: An extra night in Kaiteriteri
Why not enjoy a relaxing stay in Kaiteriteri at the end of your trip. There is a range of accommodation in Kaiteriteri including an Eco Resort, with vegetarian restaurant, spa, massage and pool facilities.

Add On Option: Abel Tasman National Park Day
Staying the night in Kaiteriteri makes it easy to use the following day for a trip in the Abel Tasman National Park. In the morning, it’s an easy walk to the beachfront where your Park Day begins. Wilsons Abel Tasman offers a range of single day trips in the park (standard retail prices apply). For a flexible full day walking trip option, the Open Day Pass is recommended. There is also a range of full day kayak trips available. If you’d like to book a Park Day as part of your cycling trip, the tour operator will ensure your whole itinerary fits together seamlessly.

Contact us if you’d like an additional night in Mapua, Kaiteriteri or a day in Abel Tasman National Park

  • Is there a limit for the luggage transfers?

Yes. Due to health and safety concerns, the maximum bag weight for the luggage transfers is 15kg. The tour operator can provide secure storage for extra luggage at their base.

  • If I'm driving to Nelson, is there parking available?

Yes. The tour operator has plenty of free, off-street parking for your vehicles at their base.

  • Is there a family package?

Yes! A family package is available. The price will be based on 2 adults and 2 children riding child bikes.

Contact us if you'd like to avail this package

  • Please read here for a message from the tour operator regarding COVID-19

For any trip that can not go ahead due to government imposed Covid 19 restrictions which prevent planned travel between your home and our location you will be eligible for a 100% credit or refund. For trips that include a Wilsons Abel Tasman component, please refer to their terms and conditions

  • Are children welcome?

Yes. The Great Taste trail is very suitable for children and the tour operator has a minimum age of 1-year-old for their tours. Child discounts are available.

Following our successful cycle trip last year with the [tour operator] we decided to repeat the fabulous 3 day-Coastal Classic bike trip from Stoke to Kaiteriteri. Again, very good communication by email and phone ahead of our personalised trip. Prompt pick-up from our accommodation on our first day and extensive and clear briefing at the company’s depot. Appreciated the company’s creative detours following the cyclone damage a few weeks before. Luggage in our rooms every time at arrival. An unusual problem with one of the bike chains mid-tour was resolved within an hour with a bike exchange. Thanks Rose! Wilson boat trip into the Abel Tasman organized by the company too, including complimentary lite picnic. Prompt pick up from Kaiteriteri by cheerful Dutch team member. Would highly recommend the company to family and friends. Excellent experience.

Really enjoyed a 3 day trip from Nelson to Kaiteriteri, with a trip into Abel Tasman at the end. The organization was made easy by using [the tour operator] being picked up and returned to the airport. Lovely people to deal with. Enjoyed cycling through the orchards and estuaries and along the beautiful long beaches and also the food and environment at Riverside cafe and at Mapua. The hill on the middle day was a challenge but had a good view at the top.

Kathy and I had a wonderful time, thanks. The rides were most enjoyable and the accommodation was great. Transfers easy and seamless. All your people were most helpful and friendly. I'm sure we'll be back to do more rides.
