Denmark is widely lauded for its quality of life, superb cuisine, wonderful architecture, and its pure commitment to the importance of hygge (coziness and contentment). This socially progressive nation boasts glorious varied landscapes with epic coastlines, gorgeous pasture land, charming towns and enveloping forests all perfect for exploring on a bike adventure. Seeing is believing, so grab your bicycle and discover just why Denmark frequently tops the charts as the most liveable and happiest nation on earth.

Denmark’s love affair with cycling is well storied and with more than 12,000 kilometers (7456 mi) of signposted routes to explore there is plenty to sink your tires into. Capital city Copenhagen will be the first of many places to capture your heart, particularly if you join the throng of locals on a bike. Full of variety you can ride out to Rosenborg Castle for a history fix, snap pictures at the beautiful waterfront district of Nyhavn and then wander the colorful anarchist commune of Christiania. Green, clean, cool, packed full of sights and excellent food - there are 15 Michelin starred restaurants - Denmark’s capital city is well worth staying a while to truly explore on two wheels.

Tearing yourself away from Copenhagen is not easy, but fortunately, there are many other wonderful places in Denmark to visit and best of all they are easily reachable on two wheels. Riding along Køge bay provides sweeping views across the Baltic Sea, while the city of Køge is one of Denmark’s oldest with beautiful, white sandy beaches and sparkling seas that demand you take a swim.

Heading inland also provides rich rewards and the excellent Hedebostien Cycle Path leads you through verdant countryside, picturesque villages and lovely scenery en route to the fantastic city of Roskilde. There are many sights to hop off your bike here for, including the magnificent Roskilde Cathedral - a UNESCO World Heritage Site that holds the tombs of 37 Danish Kings and Queens, which looms over a fjord harbor home to replica Viking ships. To really reap the rewards of Roskilde, visit at the end of June and enjoy the world-famous Roskilde Festival which attracts huge rock bands and more than 100,000 people over the course of four days.

However, if you do not fancy a party then head for any of the 55 stunning islands on the South Funen Archipelago where serenity and wonderful beaches await. Picking an island can be tricky, but Ærø stands out. Here it feels as if time has stood still with colorful timber-framed houses, an idyllic marketplace, old water pumps and perfect green rural countryside all providing the perfect backdrop for a bike tour.

And the same can be said for Denmark as a whole. Clean air, clean views, wonderful scenery, and excellent food are the highlights of any cycling trip here and it does not get any better than that.
