Itinerary Details

  1. Day 1Christchurch to Hanmer Springs

    You will meet at 9.00am at your accommodation in Christchurch. Your guide will discuss the itinerary and fit you to your bike. Maps will be supplied. You will then be driven to Saltwater Creek (c.30 mins) to commence cycling on quiet roads towards Amberley, via Balcairn. The first wine tasting will be at Pegasus Winery (26 km/16 mi)  From here it is short ride to Waipara Hills Winery and Cafe (or similar) for lunch. After lunch, you will be driven over Weka Pass to Ferry Bridge and cycle from here to Hanmer Springs, a distance of 10 km (6.2 mi). Hanmer Springs has been a popular thermal resort since 1914, has much to offer in addition to the deservedly famous hot pools: jet boating on the river, bungy jumping, mountain biking, horse riding, walks, or just relaxing and soaking up the tranquil atmosphere.

  2. Day 2Hanmer Springs to Christchurch via Greta Valley

    Leaving Hanmer Springs by minibus, you will drive to the Hurunui Tavern to cycle delightful backroads of Horsley Downs and Hawarden to Waikari (23 km/14 mi). Here you will cross the highway to take the picturesque Waikari / Greta Valley road. Lunch will be at Waipara Springs Winery. After lunch, it is a short ride into Waipara town, where you'll have a wine tasting at Torlesse Winery, close to the Weka Pass steam train and Glenmark church. Whilst you are sampling the wines, your bikes will be loaded onto the trailer for the drive back to Christchurch.
