Chiang Mai is rated as one of the world’s top destinations to visit. Thailand’s premier northern region expertly blends wonderful countryside, a culture that spans thousands of years, stunning wildlife, and an array of activities sure to keep people of all ages happy. This ideal mix is perfect for a family cycling adventure.
After touching down and meeting your lovely guides who speak the local language, you'll get going straight away, hopping on bikes to navigate your way around the outskirts of the city. You will quickly realize that this is a trip like none other. A mountain backdrop guides you as you breeze through villages, past fragrant fruit orchards and miles upon miles of paddy fields.
As the wind rushes past and the sun beats down you can revel in these wonderful moments with your nearest and dearest. Every day brings with it an exciting activity and on the first it involves kayaking and a trip to Buffalo Island to watch the giant inhabitants there.
Thai cuisine and hospitality is world renowned; on the second day, you'll delve deeper into these charms with a trip to an organic farm. Here the hosts will teach you everything you want to know about spices and vegetables before selecting your ingredients for a delicious dinner. Later that evening you will sleep in a traditional Thai hut to experience the reality of life in this country.
While much of the trip is educational it is fun too. For instance, a trip to Buffalo Village teaches the importance of the creatures in traditional rice farming, but also allows you to get your hands mucky by planting and harvesting rice.
A true trip highlight for many family members is the chance to get acquainted with Earth’s gentle giants and Thailand’s national animal – the elephant. A day trip to a sanctuary which rescues elephants gives you the chance to bathe, feed and interact with these sensitive and intelligent creatures. Before you know it, it will be your last day of riding but still there is more to be squeezed out with a handicraft workshop, more glorious countryside riding and a much-needed soak at a hot springs where you can reflect on an epic family adventure together.
