Horeke, on the beautiful Hokianga Harbour, is home to New Zealand's oldest hotel. Much of the tour follows the disused Bay of Island's vintage railway.

Remains of old gold mines can be seen in the Gorge; the town of Waihi has an open cast gold mine that still operates.
