  • What's the tour like?

The trail officially begins in Kaiaua in the North, tracing the picturesque Shorebird Coast along the Firth of Thames. Riders traverse diverse landscapes, from the lush Hauraki Plains to the captivating Karangahake Gorge, and then enjoy a gentle southbound ride through verdant farmlands to the hometown of the Hobbiton Movie Set.

Benefiting from a temperate climate, the trail offers a superb, all-season riding experience. Predominantly wide, flat, and smooth, with a gentle gradient, it accommodates a range of bikes, from children's bikes and uprights to touring bikes, mountain bikes, and e-bikes.

[The tour operator] offers a good service for those wishing to enjoy the Hauraki Rail Trail. Becky gave us outstanding service: before we left home, when we collected the bikes in Thames and during the cycle. She is to be congratulated for her commitment. indeed, she remedied some earlier confusion. Our advice would be to ensure cyclists ask about the condition of the trail, suitable bikes for the conditions and tools needed. Also a good idea to check your itinerary to ensure all relevant details are there. Bikes were in excellent condition with clean helmets, bike bags and gel seats (if required).
