Sri Lanka, the 'Teardrop of India', is a collection of ancient and natural delights that will bedazzle visitors as you move from religious to monarchical to colonial sites. Left behind by Buddhists, Hindus, the British, Dutch, Portuguese, and Indians, these influences are seen throughout the trail of historical and cultural sites.

  • How long is the tour? How many days of riding?

This tour is 7 days long, with 5 riding days.

  • What's the tour like?

The bicycle journey will be on quiet back roads, estate tracks, and gravel paths. We cover 222 km (138 mi) in 5 cycling days, and much, if not most, of the terrain is undulating. When you combine the great variety of cycling with the cultural and natural attractions, there is plenty to delve into and enjoy.

Suitability: This trip is an active tour, which means you can expect to exert yourself on some sections of the ride. Cyclists should be in relatively overall good physical shape with at least a moderate degree of cycling experience. Being physically fit will, of course, be a huge asset, but as the tour is fully supported, the van is always close at hand if needed.

Biking Conditions: The road surfaces are mixed: most days, you'll ride on reasonably good quality asphalt roads, but there are enough sections on very badly broken or dirt tracks that you will need a mountain bike, preferably one with front shocks. However, there is nothing technical involved on this tour, and anyone, assuming they have a reasonable level of fitness, will be able to join. A support truck is always available to help.

  • How many riders will be in the group?

Groups can be from 2 to 16. For groups of 9 or more, a second guide joins the tour.

  • Is there a minimum age for this tour?

Yes, riders must be 18 years old by the time the tour starts.

  • Can I rent a bike for the tour?

Yes, quality mountain bikes can be hired for the duration of the tour.

The bikes are well-known makes with lightweight alloy frames, 24 to 27 speed gears, v-brakes, have Shimano components and front suspension.

E-bikes are also available for hire which can help manage long distances and climbing terrain through the use of a pedal-activated electric motor.

  • Am I safe?

The tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue. But to a large degree, riders must be responsible for their own safety during the tour. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a cycling tour.

  • Where does the tour start and finish?

The tour starts with an airport pick up from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). It will end in Colombo which can be accessed through the same airport.

  • Do I have to pay if traveling alone?

You are not required to pay a surcharge for traveling alone. The tour operator will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveler of the same gender. If you cannot be matched, they will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share, a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room.

  • Are helmets included when hiring a bike?

Yes, if you're hiring a bike from the operator, a complimentary helmet is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.

Great balance of cycling and history

The trip was well coordinated. A good balance of cycling and visiting the historical sites. The guides were courteous and went out of their way to assist.

Fun learning about Sri Lanka
Karl Seiler — September 2017

No other form of travel lets you cover distance whilst learning so much about a country. Sampath was an outstanding guide providing quality equipment and a knowledge of the local environment, we learn about local lifestyles, farming methods, local history, fish, animals, birds, trees and crops and always had time…
