This tour of Provence takes in the region made famous in Peter Mayle’s ‘A Year in Provence’, with its lavender farms and olive groves, charming villages with bustling markets overlooked by apricot-coloured houses with pastel blue shutters. Menerbes, Gordes, Roussillon with its ochre cliffs, Vaison-la- Romaine and its Roman bridge – all will enthrall you, as will the earthly delights of the wineries of Gigondas and Beaumes-de-Venise. Dine on seafood from the Mediterranean, lamb from the high pastures, glorious fruit and vegetables, and culinary masterpieces suffused with herbes de provence. This cycling tour of Provence is a feast for all the senses as you take in the sights, sounds, tastes and smells that make this region so unique.

  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in Avignon and transfers can be arranged from and to either the train station or the airport (Avignon-Provence airport – AVN), or any of the hotels in Avignon. Transfers are also possible from other nearby locations (e.g., Nîmes airport) by arrangement.

  • How long is the tour? How many days cycling?

The tour is 7 days long with 5 days of cycling. The first day has some optional cycling available so if you choose to participate then you would have 6 days of riding.

  • What's the tour like?

This Cycling Tour of Provence is a feast for all the senses as you will take in the sights, sounds, tastes and smells that make this region so unique.

The tour covers around 50 km (31 mi) per day and is a moderately paced tour focusing on the beautiful surrounds and gastronomy of the area.

  • If I'm travelling on my own, do I have to pay more?

If you wish to have your own room then a single supplement is payable.

  • Is there any car parking available?

If you have a vehicle the tour operator can arrange secure parking for your car and return you to it after the tour.

  • What are the arrangements with food?

All evening meals are included; restaurants are carefully selected for cuisine and ambience. The tour operator favours those with a strong regional flavour. All meals include a starter, main course and dessert; some will have an additional cheese course. The tour operator is happy to arrange for the restaurants to cater for specific dietary requirements, allergies, etc. Wine is also included with the meals, again favouring the local appellations of which there are so many! Breakfasts are included, usually continental although many hotels will provide a buffet-style breakfast. Lunch is not included as different people have different requirements, but the tour operator will suggest restaurants for lunch.

  • Is a bike included?

Yes, the tour operator provides lightweight alloy framed Trek ‘hybrid’ touring bicycles with 24 indexed gears, fully equipped with lock, pump and toolkit (although the guides will generally be on hand to fix punctures and minor mechanical problems). For carrying the items you might need during the day (camera, wallet, windbreaker, etc.) a capacious handlebar bag is fitted, which also features a large map pocket. These clip on and off the bike in a flash so that you can always take your valuables with you when off the bike. The bikes are meticulously maintained and the tour operator keeps a wide range of sizes; female specific saddles are also available.

The tour operator also carries rain capes should they be required (but hopefully not!). For certain tours, they also have available 27-speed drop-handlebar race-style bikes, and tandems may also be available on certain tours by special request.

  • Is a helmet included?

The tour operator does not provide helmets automatically, as they find people prefer their own if they want to wear one, and sizing and fit is quite personal; however, they always have helmets available for use.

  • What are the guides and support like?

You will have two guides on every tour; one cycling with the group and one in the minibus which will follow the group. The bus carries all luggage not required for the day's ride and will always be available for anyone at any point during the day. If for instance, you want to take a day off the bike, or if a particular day seems a little hard, the bus will take you for as long or as little as you wish it to.

To ensure maximum flexibility for all riders, everybody is provided with detailed route maps for each day, and both guides are easily contactable by mobile phone. The guides are enthusiastic experts on the local area and will be able to sort out any problems or special requests that you might have.

  • Is there a minimum age?

Yes, 18 is the minimum age for the tour.

  • What's the maximum group size?

The tours are kept to a small size of just 16 participants.

We just wanted to take this opportunity to send a big THANK YOU for a wonderful trip. I know that it is very difficult to put all that together but I thought we had a great group and everything from the riding to the wonderful places to stay and the food were exceptional.
