  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts in Tirana and ends in Shkoder, Albania.

Fly in/out of Tirana International Airport Mother Teresa (TIA).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 15 days long with 12 days cycling.

  • What's the tour like?

This trip is classified Road and Activity Level 4 (Moderate/Challenging).

        Average daily distance: 37mi (60km)
        Number of days cycling: 12
There will be a support vehicle available at all times. Limited seats available
Terrain and route: 90 percent paved, 10 percent poor condition

On the route, there are some potholed sections and some unsurfaced areas. The terrain is undulating with some long, tough climbs. When cycling through Montenegro, there are several long, dark tunnels. Bike lights are provided locally but if you have powerful bike lights at home, it is recommended that you bring them with you.

Remember, e-bikes are possible to rent on this tour if you are worried about the distance or elevation.

  • Is a bike available?

The standard bikes for this trip are Giant Roam (men) and Giant Rove (women) hybrid bikes with front suspension.  E-bikes are available for an extra cost.

Alternatively, you can bring your own bike (BYO) but this is on a request basis and additional charges may apply to cover the transportation of your bike during the tour.

    Conditions

    1. The equipment remains the property of the supplier and you may not sell, hire out or part possession with the equipment.

    2. You must not misuse the equipment and must return it in the same condition as when received (ordinary wear and tear excepted). The supplier is entitled to charge for any damage caused to the equipment during the period of hire.

    3. You must ensure that the equipment is adequately secured when not in use. In the event of the equipment being lost or stolen, you may be liable for the replacement value of the equipment

    4. You must not use the equipment whilst under the influence of drink or drugs and should immediately notify the Supplier in the event of breakdown or loss.

    Extra Bike Bits

You may like to bring your own pedals and saddle (excluding the seat post) or gel saddle cover to fit to the hire bikes. The tour operator encourages this, if it is your preference. However, please note that you are responsible for your own equipment, and removing your saddle/pedals at the end of the trip. They cannot guarantee the return of any bike parts left behind.

  • Do I have to wear/bring a helmet?

Wearing a helmet is mandatory for anyone taking part in this cycling holiday. Group members must bring their own helmets, as they are not available for hire.

Cycling of all kinds has its dangers and accidents can happen from time to time. Please ensure that you are properly prepared for the riding you are going to undertake.

    Recommended Cycling Clothing

Padded cycling shorts (with loose 'over-shorts' where recommended), breathable clothing, and a lightweight waterproof/windproof top. Shoes with relatively stiff soles are better for biking but are not essential unless you are cycling long distances. Most people want to carry certain items with them during the day while cycling, for this we recommend a large bum-bag or small close-fitting daysack.

  • Should I have travel insurance?

Yes. It is a condition of joining this holiday that you must be fully insured against medical and personal accident risks (to include repatriation costs and air ambulance or helicopter rescue services where appropriate). On arrival in destination for your trip, you will be asked to present details to your leader or local representative of your policy.

  • Can I have private room?

A single supplement is applicable if you are travelling alone or wish to have your own room.

  • Can you advise about spending money, tipping and currency?

    Money

    Albania's currency: Albanian lek (ALL)

    Kosovo's currency: Euro (EUR)

    Montenegro's currency: Euro (EUR)

North Macedonia's currency: Macedonian denar (MKD)

    ATM Availability

Cash machines are available in Tirana Airport and all major towns visited. Major credit cards are accepted in shops for larger purchases as well as restaurants, but cash is usually easier. It is best to use a mixture of British pounds, euros and ATMs.

    Extra Expenses & Spending Money

Please budget at least €10 per meal. Depending on what you choose to eat and drink, this could come to more. Please budget around €10 for entry into some of the local attractions.

    Tipping

Local staff are paid well and fairly for their work. Tipping is at your discretion but many clients wish to tip their leaders and driver at the end of the trip, we suggest €3-€5 per day for the guide and €2-€3 per day for the driver. Most groups prefer to present the money to the leader at the end of the week with two separate envelopes (one for the leader and one for the driver). This is completely at your own discretion and to be used as a guideline only.

Challenging climbs with amazing scenic views
Brian Sherrell
(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

A fantastic itinerary through four Balkan countries, all offering scenic views, good cycling , excellent food and just enough historic places of interest. Challenging cycling climbs rewarded with spectacular long descents.

Most Inspirational Moment
The ride through the Tara Canyon reaching the famous Tara Bridge. Endless fantastic photo opportunities.

Thoughts on Group Leader
What an excellent guide Dhimo was. Professional, helpful, knowledgeable, choosing good routes and pointing out places of interest. In depth knowledge of the region culture, language and currencies. Fantastic help choosing unique restaurants, ordering appropriate local tasty dishes and organising an easy method to pay all the individual bills. Complete empathy with all group members. Good sense of humour. A really good guide and companion who I would like to consider a new friend. Of note Viz, the driver also contributed significantly to the success of this tour.

Advice for Potential Travellers
You need to be quite fit but if you are, you will struggle to find better views on any tour. End of April / early May was a good time to visit. All countries were safe and culturally interesting. I have been on several [tour operator] cycling holidays and this is one of the best.

Suggestions
I strongly recommend this trip for adequately keen and fit cyclists.

My Favourite [tour operator] trip Yet
Richard Sharp
(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

The tour is well paced for both distance and difficulty through beautiful scenery with some long climbs and exhilarating descents. We travelled the first two weeks of May and were very lucky with the weather with the rain staying away for almost all of the trip. The tour took us through glorious sunshine and took us right up to the snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dimitry (Dimi) and his almost inexhaustible knowledge of the complex history of the region led the cycling & Elvis (Vici) with his careful, patient driving provided vehicular support. They worked fantastically well together, had every situation under control and were a pleasure to travel with. Together they showed us some of the highlights for the beautiful Balkans and made us feel extremely comfortable/welcome.

Suggestions

In summary I feel extremely lucky to have been on this trip. Some of magic was the chemistry between those in the party but a huge part of it was the part Dimi & Vici played making everything work so beautifully. They deserve my gratitude and hope you are lucky enough to take the tour with this partnership.

Great way to discover the Balkans

(Review obtained from Tour Operator)

Great trip and fantastic itinerary going through 4 countries ( crossing the borders by bike, was a lot of fun!). This trip is more on the challenging side with long climbs and several days spent in the mountains. The views from the mountain roads were fantastic and made us forget about the climbs. It was also a fantastic way to discover the history of this region going form Ottoman empire to Communist / modern era. The food was really good, a lot of local cheeses, grilled vegetables and olive oil. Great to refuel after a day spent cycling! The hotels selected were great and some of them even features a hot tub and a sauna to relax in the evening.

Most Inspirational Moment

The day spent going up and down Durmitor us the highlight for me. Unspoilt nature, quiet roads and great 360 degrees views.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Dimitri and the Support driver "VC" were great, providing a very detailed and clear briefing every morning. Always happy to answer our questions.

Advice for Potential Travellers
Pack several Layers! The temperatures on this trip vary a lot! We had cold mornings in the mountains but very hot days once we were cycling the bay of Kotor. I found myself starting a couple of days with long sleeves gloves and hat and finishing in short sleeve jersey, zip open by the end of the day.
