  • Where does the tour start and end?

The tour starts and ends in central Christchurch where you will be collected and returned to at the end of the tour. Fly in/out of Christchurch International Airport (CHC).

  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 6 days long with all 6 days being cycling days.

  • What's the tour like?

45% of the Alps 2 Ocean trail is compacted gravel terrain. You will need to be confident riding on uneven surfaces and be aware that riding like this can reduce normal cycling speeds. There are some narrow cattle-stop grates, and 'chicanes' (s-shaped safety gateways).

30% of the trail is on sealed roads. Most of these roads are quiet back-roads but you need to be aware of the road rules and be able to cope with small amounts of traffic.

18% of the trail is gravel road. This is manageable for most, however, cyclists need to be comfortable riding on rougher gravel surfaces including graded roads and deeper gravel. 6% is rough shingle - this can include rocks and rough terrain. Some cyclists will choose to walk these sections.

Loved it! Our guides, Marcus and Carina, were fun, knowledgeable, very helpful and well-organised. Food was excellent and I had the best fish and chips ever! Lodging and transportation were clean and comfortable. Highly recommended!!

Having done a lot of this trip some 10 years ago in the McKenzie country I was a little skeptical as to how this would turn out. Was a real treat with all the new off road trails, this really made a difference along with the two awesome staff, Angela and Will which also makes a very big difference. The wonderful country has to be right up there along with the fantastic team that brought it all together, of course the weather does come into it also!!

We had a great trip despite some bad weather at the start. The guides were experienced, friendly and supportive. They went out of the way to make sure we got plenty of vegan food throughout. And don’t be afraid to book an e-bike if you need it because the route is NOT all downhill. A few people struggled at times.
