  • How long is the tour? How many cycling days?

The tour is 7 days long with 5 cycling days.

  • What's the trip like?

The trip is graded introductory to moderate. The terrain on Magnetic Island has a number of steep inclines but the use of electric bikes makes these easier to manage. However, the areas around Townsville along the Ross River and north along the coast are fairly flat and make for easy cycling. There are four days of guided cycling on this tour that range from 20km to 55km yet your guide works with the groups interest and desire and has ride extensions available on each day if you wish to extend your ride.

If you choose to do the trip with a hybrid bike (not the included electric bike) the grading will increase to moderate to challenging, particularly the cycles on Magnetic Island.

Your cycle guide will meet up with you at your motel on four mornings to head off around some of the local sites. The days are flexible enough to include ride extensions if you chose or to have time for your own self discovery in the afternoon

  • Will there be luggage transfers?

Your luggage will be transferred between your motels. You will need to carry your luggage on the Sealink Ferry to Magnetic Island, on arrival you will meet with a representative who will collect your bag and transfer it to your accommodation on the island. You will then cycle to your accommodation while your bags are transferred. Please keep your luggage to one bag per person and weighing less than 15kg.

  • Do I need to be a capable cyclist?

Yes, you need to have some level of fitness yet much of the cycling on the first two days is around Townsville which is fairly flat. Magnetic Island has a few climbs but the distances are fairly short.

  • What's the weather like?

The Townsville area has a tropical climate but, due to its geographical location, rainfall is not as high as elsewhere in the tropics. Even during mid winter the daytime temperatures rarely fall below 24 degrees with minimum temperatures in the mid teens. The Summer months are not the best time to visit this region because of high temperatures, humid conditions and beach closures. Spring, winter and autumn are ideal.

  • Can I bring my own bike?

Yes, you can use your own bike if you prefer. Let us know at the time of booking and a small discount will be applied.

  • How do I get back at the end of the trip?

Your cycle tour finishes on day 7 when you arrive back at Townsville Wharf from Magnetic Island. Local shuttle buses and taxis can transfer you from here to the airport, train station, bus station and other city destinations.

Excellent hosts in Townsville and Magnetic. Norco ebikes were the best I have ridden and you need them for the big hills on Magnetic Island. Accommodation was good in both places but eating out was very expensive so we ended up self catering a lot.

Highly recommended trip

What a wonderful trip! It was our first cycling holiday and I was a little hesitant when booking it as I didn't know how difficult or easy the whole trip would be, especially when travelling in a group. This trip was recently changed to use e-bikes, something else I hadn't tried before. They turned out to be a great option as each person can dial up the assistant to the level they feel comfortable with and nobody else has to know what that is. You can also turn it off altogether for a bit of a workout. As a result, everyone enjoyed the trip and nobody was left self conscious about falling behind or slowing the group down. The bikes themselves were well maintained and the local guides were excellent - very friendly and helpful. By travelling to different locations during the trip, we got to experience a variety a locations, no doubt more than we would have if we visited by ourselves. Overall I would highly recommend this trip!
