As the world’s 28th most visited city, Venice is everything you’ve come to expect it to be. The floating city is wonderfully unique with its charming cityscape, romantic nature and rich cultural heritage that we’ve all dreamed of seeing. The city has been a major tourist destination for hundreds of years, conjuring images in our minds: taking a gondola tour down the grand canal while a driver sings to you and your love, or having some gelato on a hot summer evening while people watching in the Piazza San Marco, these are experiences that tourists have sought after for years. This tourism success hasn’t come without its issues though, as the city can often feel full beyond capacity with all the canals and piazzas elbow to elbow with sightseers trying to get the best selfie angle possible. Be prepared to pay double what you would elsewhere in Europe for a good meal and a place to stay during the high season in Venice; planning ahead as much as possible can really help alleviate this.
We know cycling through Venice itself isn’t really possible, but Venice is one of the best jumping-off points in all of Italy. If you’re looking for a relaxing seaside day cycle, book a tour through Venice and the breaker islands of Lido and Santa Maria Del Mare, where you will get one of the best views of the city of Venice and the open waters of the Adriatic Sea. This is a great choice for families with small children.
With the Dolomites just a hop, skip and a jump north, Venice is the best starting point for your adventure into the mountains. There are a variety of tour operators in Venice that will take you on a number of guided rides through the impressive, and daunting, Dolomite mountain range to the north. Venice is also a great place to start on a ride into the Lombardy province to see Lake Garda and Lake Como, with a stop, of course, in Shakespeare's famed Verona. No matter which way you’re traveling, Venice should be near the top of every cyclist’s list.
